A pre-trip inspection is the cheapest insurance in trucking. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and it is the difference between finding a problem in the yard and finding it on the shoulder.

The list below splits into two kinds of help: paper you can print and carry, and videos you can watch on a break. Use the checklist every day. Use the rest to sharpen the parts you tend to rush.

Pre-trip inspection questions

How long should a daily pre-trip inspection take?

Most drivers budget 15 to 20 minutes for a thorough daily walkaround. The CDL skills test version runs longer because you have to name and explain each part out loud.

Do I need a checklist for a pre-trip inspection?

A checklist keeps you from skipping steps on a tired morning. Some states let you use one during the CDL test and others require it from memory, so check your state's CDL manual.

What is the most important part of a pre-trip inspection?

Schools and examiners treat the air brake check as the highest-stakes step, and on many state tests skipping it is an automatic fail. On a daily basis, give extra time to brakes, tires, lights, and the coupling connections.

Are pre-trip inspections required by law?

Federal rules expect a driver to be satisfied that the vehicle is in safe operating condition before driving it, and to report defects found. Your carrier and your state may add their own requirements.

What is the difference between a daily pre-trip and the CDL skills test pre-trip?

The daily pre-trip is a working check to catch problems before you roll. The skills test version is a scored exam where you point to parts and explain what you are checking, and the exact procedure varies by state.

Where can I get a free pre-trip inspection checklist?

Truckers Resource Hub offers a free one-page printable checklist you can keep in the door pocket. Several CDL schools and state agencies also publish free checklists and study guides.

What are the most common out-of-service violations on a truck inspection?

In the 2026 CVSA International Roadcheck, brake systems were the top vehicle out-of-service violation at 3,379, followed by tires at 2,914, defective brakes at 2,072, cargo securement at 1,724, and lights at 1,659.
