Day summary

Reference only — these are the federal limits for property-carrying drivers, written out so you do not have to remember them. Your electronic log is the legal record of your hours. This app does not track them.

The limits

After 10 consecutive hours off duty.

11-hour driving limit

11 hours of driving

You may drive a maximum of 11 hours after 10 consecutive hours off duty.

14-hour window

14 consecutive hours

You may not drive beyond the 14th consecutive hour after coming on duty. Time off duty during the day does not push the window back.

30-minute break

30 minutes, after 8 cumulative hours of driving

Once you have driven 8 cumulative hours without a break of at least 30 minutes, you need one. On-duty not driving, off-duty or sleeper berth time all count toward it.

60 and 70-hour limits

60 hours in 7 days, or 70 hours in 8 days

You may not drive after 60 or 70 hours on duty across 7 or 8 consecutive days, depending on which schedule your carrier operates.

34-hour restart

34 or more consecutive hours off duty

Taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty restarts your 7 or 8 day period.

Sleeper berth split

One stretch of at least 7 hours in the berth, plus one of at least 2 hours

You may split the required 10 hours off duty. Every pairing has to add up to at least 10 hours.

Adverse driving conditions

Up to 2 extra hours

When you hit adverse conditions you did not know about when you started, you may extend both the 11-hour driving limit and the 14-hour window by up to 2 hours.

Short-haul exception

150 air-miles, 14-hour duty period

A driver who stays within 150 air-miles of the normal work reporting location, returns there within 14 consecutive hours, and does not exceed a 14-hour duty period is exempt from the logging requirements in 395.8 and 395.11.

These are the property-carrying rules. Passenger-carrying limits are different. The full text and the current version is on FMCSA's summary page.

Why there are no countdown clocks here

A web page cannot warn you when it is closed, and you already carry an ELD that counts these hours as the legal record. A second set of numbers that is quieter and less complete only matters on the day it disagrees with your log. So this tab tells you the rules and stays out of the way.

General reference only. This app does not track your hours of service and is not an electronic logging device. Fuel and cost figures are estimates from the numbers you enter. Follow your carrier's policy and the current regulations, and treat your electronic log as the record of your hours.
